Hard Text

Covering text with a textured shell has become an essential aspect of my active meditation process and healing journey. Although the saying "actions speak louder than words" often holds true, I believe that our thoughts and internal dialogue can have a profound impact on our behavior. That's why I find these pieces of art to be beautiful reminders for the subconscious to reinforce affirmations and lessons learned.

For over a decade, I've been an avid thrifter and accumulated a collection of unused garments that I couldn't bear to dispose of or donate knowing the detrimental impact of the fast fashion industry. To combat this, I decided to recycle the clothes and transform them into beautiful pieces of art (after sanitizing). The final touch of adding the hard mix texture creates visually stunning and unique pieces by blending the varying textures of the clothing into a cohesive design.
Soft Text
-
Denim weaving allows me space to infuse my designs with a deep sense of emotion while paying tribute to my ancestry and the diverse forms of African weaving. I am often inspired by significant phrases, quotes, and lyrics from the Black community and turn them into tangible works of art—immortalizing the powerful words and sentiments of my culture into physical forms that people can appreciate and connect with.
-
Fast fashion is a major problem in our society, and like many others, I fell victim to its allure. As a teenager, I had a massive collection of denim jeans, packing more than 27 of my 30+ pairs when I left for college. However, the hoarder in me wouldn't let me throw away any of my denim, so in 2009, I cut up several pairs of jeans to create my first denim art piece, which sparked my passion for sustainable fashion and repurposing materials.
Found Text
-
The title of my art series is “Love Letters to My Younger Self.” As an art therapy student, I feel compelled to address the traumas and maladaptive coping skills that stem from childhood. These found poems not only helps me work through my own experiences and emotions, but also serves as a source of inspiration from the stories of others, including friends, family, and young people in today's society.
-
Creating found poem art is a unique way to recycle old books and give them a new purpose. By selecting words and phrases from existing text and rearranging them, found poems create new meanings and messages that can be personal and powerful. This process allows individuals to gain insight into their own experiences and perspectives while also repurposing books that are no longer needed or wanted, you can create one too!
