it’s me, Jessica, the artist
[jess if you know me]
My art journey made a permanent shift during college, where I was heavily influenced by the African American history courses I crammed into my schedule. The O.G. was the first piece of original work to push me into the realm of fine art. Almost a decade later, I returned to using denim and textile mediums to create sculptural text pieces, marking a turning point in my artistic journey. It amuses me how text has become such an integral part of my art, especially since my high school AP art teacher discouraged me from using it, claiming art should speak for itself without the need for including words. However, I now know words are art.
I intend to immortalize text in new life forms. Specifically, text composed by black poets, authors, lyricists, and generational sayings—celebrating and immortalizing the culture.
My entire body of work is a reflection of my personal and generational healing. I'm excited to share my art journey with you, not only as a viewer but also as an active participant in the mystical powers of art. As an aspiring art therapist, I am on a mission to share art as a tool for healing, self-exploration, and self-affirmation.
